Library cards
Who can get a card
Residents of Grimes, unincorporated Polk County, and Open Access communities are eligible. Bring a photo ID showing your current address, or a photo ID plus a current proof of address such as a piece of mail or an electronic bill. Kids ages 5 to 17 need a parent or guardian to sign, and that adult shows ID. The library does not list a card fee on its card page, so ask at the desk if you are outside those areas.
Up to 200 items can be checked out on one card at a time.
DVDs and Blu-rays are capped at 10 combined, and video games at 2.
Most items can be renewed twice unless someone else has a hold on them.
When a hold comes in, you have 3 days to pick it up.
What is inside
More than books
Wi-Fi, computers, and hotspots: Wi-Fi inside the library, public computers with printing, and Wi-Fi hotspots you can check out. Kids' computers, a Nintendo Switch, a VR headset, and LaunchPad tablets are on hand too.
Printing, copying, faxing, scanning: offered daily, with a charge for printing, faxing, and copies. The library does not post prices, so call before a big job. Mobile printing is set up on its website.
Rooms: meeting rooms hold 20 to 40 people and study rooms hold 2 to 6. Reserve them online.
Notary: a notary public at no cost. Call ahead to confirm someone is on duty.
Digital: e-books and audiobooks through Libby (BRIDGES), movies through Kanopy, and magazines. There are also job seeker resources, test prep, and homework help online.
Checkout extras: Adventure Passes to area attractions, a seed library, Creative Mind Kits, and American Girl dolls.
Local history: daily and weekly newspapers plus local history materials and maps, used in the building.
Programs
Storytime and events
The library runs storytimes, a baby storytime, book clubs, crafts, speakers, and performers for all ages. The events calendar has the current schedule, and the library and Grimes Parks and Recreation put out a seasonal program guide together. For a family-friendly rainy day, pair it with our Grimes with kids guide.
