The Grimes Brief
Yes. Kennybrook Village, at 200 SW Brookside Dr, is the senior campus in Grimes, and it covers every level of care on one site, from independent apartments to 24-hour skilled nursing. It opened in 2011, and its standalone memory-care building, Maggie's Place, opened in 2020. Residents can move between levels as their needs change without leaving the campus. Book a tour online or call (515) 369-3900; a tour covers an apartment, the dining rooms, and the activity rooms.
Here is what Kennybrook's own pages list. Prices are not posted on the pages themselves (the site offers a pricing download), so ask for the current sheet on your tour.
Independent and assisted living both include scheduled transportation to medical appointments and outings within a 15-mile radius. Kennybrook's pages do not say whether it accepts Medicaid or the Elderly Waiver, so ask directly if that matters for your family.
Same operator, other towns: Kennybrook lists sister communities including Cedar Ridge Village in West Des Moines, Prairie Vista Village in Altoona, and Northridge Village in Ames. Waukee, Johnston, and Ankeny also have senior communities a short drive away.
Yes. Polk County Senior Services runs a senior site inside the Grimes Community Complex, 410 SE Main St, open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (515-986-5747). It serves a sit-down lunch Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for anyone 60 or older, and walk-ins are served from noon to 12:15. The county says the meals are free, contributions are accepted, and there is no income test; staff just help you fill out an intake form the first time. Each site sets its own activity schedule, and the county posts a monthly calendar for Grimes on its senior services page.
Grimes has no city bus, so rides come from two places.
Yes. Homeowners 65 or older can claim an extra Iowa homestead exemption of $6,500 of taxable value. File it with your county assessor (Polk or Dallas, depending on your side of town); once it is approved it carries forward, so you do not refile unless you move. A 2026 state law, SF 2472, also replaces the old homestead credit with a 10% homestead exemption, applied before the 65+ exemption, starting with the bills due in September 2027. Details are on our property tax guide.
For context, Grimes skews young: the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey puts residents 65 and older at about 7% of the population. That is part of why there is one senior campus in town and more choices in the bigger neighboring suburbs.
